Sarah pressed play. The tape hissed. Then her own voice came through the speaker — calm and deliberate in a way she had never been calm about anything. 'If you're hearing this, you found it. That means you're the sixth.' She looked at the figure. The figure had been here for all of them — stood exactly like this, in exactly this spot, while five other versions of her heard this same tape for the first time. 'The sixth what?' The figure tilted its helmet. 'The sixth you,' it said. 'The others left messages too. That's how you found the room.'

The car was where Mara said it would be. Elena got in without asking whose it was or where they were going. She opened the folder instead — she needed to know what was worth six months of her life. The first page was her file. Standard format. Photo, biometrics, clearance level. She turned to the second page. A death certificate. Date: six months ago. Cause: classified. Signed by the Director. Elena looked up. Mara was watching the road. 'You knew,' Elena said. Mara didn't answer. Which was an answer.

Margaret reached for the ledger before she could talk herself out of it. The Writer didn't stop her. The candle didn't waver. The final line was seven words. She read them once. Then again. Her hand didn't shake — which surprised her more than the words themselves. 'Is it fixed?' she asked. The Writer picked up his quill. 'Everything in the ledger has already happened,' he said. 'That is the nature of the ledger.' Margaret sat with seven words she now knew. She understood what she was going to do. She just didn't know yet if she was brave enough to do it.

Sera signed. She was going to regret this. She already regretted this. The quill had barely left the parchment when Valdris produced — from somewhere only ghosts can reach — a second document. Her first royal engagement. A public coronation. Tomorrow. The invitations, the ghost queen explained, had already been sent. 'How many people?' Sera asked. Lord Ashford and Valdris answered at exactly the same time. The whole kingdom. Sera looked at the candlestick. She was definitely going to need more silverware.

Emberheart didn't wait for permission. The moment the entity's light touched it, the small phoenix leapt — not in fear, not in flight, but in recognition. As if it had always known this moment was coming and had simply been keeping itself small until now. Kira reached after it instinctively. Beside her, the Shadow Court woman went rigid. Her hood fell. Fourteen years of command stripped from her face in a single breath. 'It's the First Flame,' she said. Not a warning. A confession. As if she had always known this too, and had spent fourteen years hoping she was wrong.

The board — seven dogs in business suits, led by the CEO, a Great Dane in a pinstripe who had been waiting his entire career for this moment — erupted into standing applause. In the back row, the IT manager opened a new browser tab. His search: 'can a dog filter count as a medical accommodation.'

The Archmage connected at last — resplendent in a tiny academic mortarboard, tiny robes, and the quiet dignity of a chicken who had simply accepted what it had become. The reversal spell existed, the Archmage confirmed via interpretive clucking. Thaddeus would need one phoenix feather, one honest politician's signature, and a really good apology. He had none of these. Behind him, Chicken King the Third had begun officially stamping APPROVED on Thaddeus's academic certificates. The Royal Academy of Bwak would not be accepting appeals.

Adras led her past the main plaza, past the Hall of Winds, past three checkpoints where other Sky-Keepers fell silent as they passed — and stopped in the Archive of Loresmasters. The room smelled of old stone and something older. Three hundred years of silence. In the centre stood a carved stone statue of a man in a long explorer's coat, one hand raised, holding a compass. Amelia recognized the jaw. The brow. The worn-in patience of someone who'd been somewhere he shouldn't be and found he didn't want to leave. 'He was our last Loremaster,' Adras said. 'He asked us to wait for whoever came next with his compass.' He paused. 'We did not expect it to take seventy years.'

The security footage was from 2019. Seven years ago. The camera angle showed the Kepler-9 control room — this room, exactly as it was now — and at the desk sat a woman with Sarah's face, Sarah's hair, Sarah's uniform. The timestamp froze at 02:31:14. Then the woman on screen turned and looked directly into the camera. As if she had known, seven years ago, that someone would be standing here watching. Below the monitor, a note was pinned with a piece of tape. PLAY ME. Sarah's handwriting. The EVA figure hadn't moved.

Sera wasn't sure when exactly it had happened — somewhere between the soup course and the announcement that a royal tailor had been summoned from the capital. The scroll the steward placed in front of her was sealed with red wax and addressed to 'Her Royal Majesty, Queen Sera of Ashford.' Valdris had signed it. Sera didn't know ghosts could hold quills. She was learning a lot of new things.

The fence at the far end had a gap Mara clearly already knew about. Behind them, Elena heard the building's external security lights come on one by one. All of them. Every floor. Protocol Seven wasn't a pursuit protocol. She understood that now. It was a containment one.

He'd never escorted one deeper into the city. He didn't explain why her grandfather's name changed things. He didn't explain the look the other Keepers exchanged. He just turned, said 'Follow,' and walked. The compass in Amelia's hand pointed straight ahead. She followed.

Valdris drifted down beside her ear. 'The east wing,' she said pleasantly, 'has very good light in the mornings.'
